Scripps, Blade Communications End Dispute

by Lucia Moses

The E.W. Scripps Co.’s incoming CEO, Kenneth W. Lowe, will have one
less issue to deal with when he assumes his new role next month. The
company and Blade Communications Inc. have reached a confidential
settlement to end their court battle stemming from Scripps’ 1992
sale of The Pittsburgh Press to Blade.

After Blade folded the Press into its Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the
two companies fought over bills for severance and other expenses.
Scripps has since paid $6.4 million in severance; the settlement
resolves the bills for vacation pay, legal fees, and disability
insurance claims.
