A former editor of the Akron Beacon Journal was named managing editor Thursday at The Plain Dealer, Ohio’s largest newspaper.

Debra Adams Simmons, 42, succeeded Tom O’Hara, who left the newspaper to teach.

Simmons was a vice president and editor at the Beacon Journal until November, when the newspaper eliminated her job as part of a staff reduction. She previously worked at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., the Detroit Free Press and The Hartford Courant.
