Popeye is what he is — 75.
The character first appeared Jan. 17, 1929, as a minor character in E.C. Segar’s “Thimble Theatre” comic. He quickly became the star of the King Features Syndicate strip, which was eventually renamed “Popeye.”
To mark the anniversary, the Empire State Building in New York City is illuminating its tower lights green — for spinach, of course — during the Jan. 16-18 weekend. Also, a Popeye costumed character greeted visitors to the building today.
A “Popeye” animated TV special will air later this year, according to King.
