(AP) The Times Herald of Port Huron says executive editor Mary Jean “Jeanie” Ruddick has died at the age of 59.

The newspaper reports Ruddick died Tuesday after a three-year battle with cancer.

The Muncie, Ind., native had been with the Times Herald since January 2006. She previously was the metro editor at the Topeka Capital-Journal in Kansas and also worked at various papers in Indiana.

Ruddick recently wrote about the craft of modern-day journalism, saying she’s “always careful to point out” to her staff “that all the prize-winning photos and videos in the world will not mask poor writing and reporting skills.”
