Telecommunications Subcommittee Gets New Chair
Powerful posts that can affect the newspaper industry are
changing hands in Washington. Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., is the
new chair of the House of Representatives’ Telecommunications
Subcommittee.
The eight-term representative was selected by the chairman of the
Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-La.
Newspaper executives hope Congress will help end the ban on
common ownership of newspapers and broadcast stations in the same
market. A defender of the ban, Federal Communications Commission
Chairman William Kennard, said his final day in office would be
last Friday.
