Rupert Murdoch’s News International has begun printing at its new Broxbourne megaplant in Hertfordshire, north of London, on triple-wide MAN Roland Colorman XXL presses. The company publishes the Times, Sunday Times, the Sun and News of the World. The plant has printed the latter two since early this year.
News International plans to cease operations at its Wapping plant, where it successfully challenged unions in the mid-1980s and began the flight from Fleet Street. The end of Wapping operations should happen next month, when installation of the 12 new color presses is complete.
Once all the new presses are rolling, News International will print 1.5 million copies of the Sun, 550,000 copies of the Times and contract print 600,000 copies of the Daily Telegraph each night, according to press reports.
