“Diesel Sweeties” will end its print run with United Media on Aug. 10.
The strip — known for its distinctive pixilated look — will continue as a webcomic. Richard Stevens began “Diesel Sweeties” online in 2000, and kept doing that version of the strip when he began the “family-friendly” United version that entered syndication in January 2007.
Factors in the decision to end the print “Diesel Sweeties” included the time involved in doing two versions of the same comic (12 strips a week) and the fact that the United comic didn’t give Stevens enough extra income to help make that extra work worthwhile.
Many print newspapers tend to pay small amounts for syndicated features; in fact, Stevens made more than 90% of his gross income last year on his Web site and merchandise.
