ProPublica is looking for a few good geeks.

On Wednesday the news site launched its Nerd Blog, billed as a place where its programmer-journalists talk about the new projects they’re working on and the news applications they’ve developed.

“We’re going to be writing about each of our projects as we release them, and flagging open source tools we’ve found useful,” Scott Klein, ProPublica’s editor of news applications, writes in the site’s inaugural post.

Klein goes on to detail what goes into creating a news app. “At ProPublica, we believe in sharing. That’s why our team releases much of our software code as open source, free for anybody to take or modify,” he writes. Check out their apps here.
The Nerd Blog crew consists of Scott Klein, Krista Kjellman Schmidt, Dan Nguyen and Jeff Larson. In addition to sharing data sets and our software code as open source, they’ll share their thoughts on other developers’ tools that are useful and new approaches to the changing world of journalism.
