Thomas Heslin has been named vice president and executive editor at The Providence Journal.

The Providence Journal, which is owned by Dallas-based media company A.H. Belo Corp., reported Sunday that the 58-year-old Heslin succeeds Joel Rawson who retired on April 29.

Heslin, a 27-year employee, has been interim executive editor since May and previously ran its online news operations as managing editor for new media.

Howard Sutton, the head of the Providence Journal Company, says Heslin has skills in investigative reporting and management and a commitment to new media that position the newspaper well for the future, the paper reported.
