The Press Democrat (Santa Rosa, Calif.) publisher Michael J. Parman announced Wednesday that he is leaving his post after 14 years to battle pancreatic cancer and devote time more to his family.
The 60-year-old Parman joined the Democrat in 1985 and served as general manager and editor before becoming publisher in 1991. Prior to his appointment, he worked at The Sacramento Bee for 11 years as sports editor, weekend editor, and assistant managing editor.
The New York Times Co., which owns The Press Democrat, is expected to announce a new publisher within the next few weeks. Parman told The Associated Press he plans to assist in the transition. His retirement will be effective Jan. 1.
