The Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, Va., will install on its four-tower Goss Flexible Printing System the automatic register control from Q.I. Press Controls North America, North Kingstown, R.I.
The first U.S. newspaper to invest in the FPS press will be equipped with mRC cameras for closed-loop color-register control. Another 18 mRC cameras will be installed on the two folders to automatically control cut-off register.
With a 72-inch web width and printing up to 90 copies per hour, the Free Lance-Star’s triplewide FPS will be able to produce 48 broadsheet pages in full color running straight, 96 pages running collect. It also will be able to produce semi-commercial products with ribbon widths up to 36 inches. To begin installation this summer, the press is expected to be in operation early next year.
The Free Lance-Star will be the third U.S. site for the mRC, following the Atlanta Journal Constitution and Transcontinental’s new plant. Q.I. Press Controls is headquartered in Oosterhout, The Netherlands.
