(AP) A newspaper publisher has decided not to press charges against a man who he said assaulted him in his office.
Tom Ward, publisher of The Valley Breeze, said he was attacked Thursday by Scott Peckham, the brother of a man killed in a traffic accident and written about in the newspaper.
Peckham, of Marina Del Rey, Calif., was upset that an article in Ward’s weekly newspaper identified his brother, Kenneth Peckham, as the target of a federal steroids investigation.
Peckham came to the newspaper office with his wife and his brother’s fiancee, grabbed Ward by the neck and pushed him onto a table, according to a police report. Peckham also allegedly threatened to kill Ward if he published anything more about his brother and told Ward that he “would also be writing his own obituary,” the police report said.
“At this time, it’s private between me and the gentleman who assaulted me,” Ward said. “We have an understanding.”
Kenneth Peckham, the owner of a local gym, was killed last week after a truck collided with a motorcycle at a red light.
The Valley Breeze is a free, locally-owned weekly newspaper that covers the Blackstone Valley, according to its Web site.
