The News & Observer of Raleigh has contracted with a transport service to deliver its newspapers, a move that will eliminate 17 full-time and 58 part-time jobs when it takes effect in January.

The newspaper reported Friday that Penske Logistics will purchase 47 of the 61 trucks in the newspaper?s transportation fleet and lease the other trucks.

Publisher Orage Quarles III said in a letter to staff that Penske Logistics is expected to hire many of the people losing their jobs. He said workers not hired by the company will be offered severance pay and health care continuation.

The move allows the newspaper to focus more on its core business, ?producing relevant and compelling news and advertising information in our newspaper and on our Web sites,? Quarles said Friday in the memo to the staff.
