Starting next Tuesday, the Register-Pajaronian in Watsonville, Calif., will no longer be a daily newspaper.
The six-day evening paper will publish only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, said Publisher Tom Cross.
The Register-Pajaronian’s fate a non-daily was sealed when two major advertisers — Mervyn’s department store and the local Circuit City electronics store — went out of business, the newspaper reported in an article by Todd Guild.
The loss of the advertisers forced the paper, which had already laid off some staff and consolidated its printing, to look at more dramatic measures, the paper said.
Cross said the new thrice-weekly Register-Pajaronian will be bigger with more local coverage. “We’re changing our focus to concentrate 100% of our efforts on local news and events,” he said.
The Register-Pajaronian began as weekly in 1868, and went daily in 1903. The name comes from the Pajaro Valley.
