Doubts About Viability Of Examiner Expressed
Clint Reilly is asking a federal judge to block the Hearst Corp.’s purchase of the San
Francisco Chronicle, the newspaper reports today. A former mayoral candidate, Reilly
still claims the deal will result in a one-newspaper town, even though Hearst is
planning to sell the San Francisco Examiner.
In court papers, Reilly’s attorneys say the proposed $25 million subsidy from the
Hearst Corp. to the Examiner’s purchasers, the Fang family, are insufficient for the
paper to survive. Reilly says several newspaper experts claim that a subsidy of at least
$50 million a year for five years is necessary.
A Hearst attorney dismissed Reilly’s argument.
