The Independent newspaper of southern Rensselaer County, N.Y. named veteran newspaper executive Tom Cincotta as its new publisher on Monday.

Cincotta has worked in local newspaper accounting and operations management for the last 20 years. The first 12 of those years were spent at the Daily Freeman, of Kingston, N.Y., and the last eight were spent at the Poughkeepsie Journal.

In addition to his duties at the Independent, which publishes every Tuesday and Friday, Cincotta will also be the publisher of the neighboring Taconic Press group, based in Millbrook, N.Y.

“I couldn’t be more pleased that Tom has accepted this opportunity,” said Ira Fusfeld, senior publisher of Journal Register Company’s Mid-Hudson cluster and publisher of the Daily Freeman, to the Independent.

“Tom worked with me in Kingston for many years,” added Fusfeld, who has in recent months served as interim publisher of The Independent and Taconic Press. “I know him to be an excellent newspaperman and a quality individual. He understands the community newspaper business and he knows the region we serve. I have no doubt he will be warmly received by our readers, advertisers and employees.”
