The Publisher of The Lakeland Times, Minocqua, will buy the Rhinelander Daily News, according to the newspapers, both of which are in northern Wisconsin’s Oneida County.

Walker Communications LLC owners Gregg and Kim Walker expect to complete the purchase Sept. 30th. No purchase price was disclosed.

Daily News Publisher Greg Mellis was quoted saying, “I have always admired how successful The Lakeland Times has been, and combining operations will better serve the Northwoods’ readers and advertisers.”

The Daily News said “sharing of resources and marketing opportunities will enhance both publications for readers, employees, advertisers and the area communities being served.” It added that “Walker plans to allow both publications to remain independent at this time.”

Lee Enterprises sold the Daily News, its smallest daily, to Blueline Media Holdings exactly four years ago. Based in Neenah, Wis., Blueline Media has operated the Daily News through Northwoods Media LLC.

The sale will allow BlueLine Media to focus on Wolf River Media and Bay Media markets, in Shawano and Green Bay, Mellis said.

The Wolf River plant in Shawano took over Rhinelander’s printing and inserting early last year (E&P Online, Feb. 4, 2009). BlueLine Media also acquired the Shawano Leader from Lee Enterprises in 2006.
