The Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch has announced Michael J. Harris, former writer and editor, as its new sports editor. Harris has been assistant sports editor at the Times-Dispatch since 2003 and was named acting sports editor in mid-August.
In 1978, Harris joined The Richmond News Leader as a sportswriter. Until the paper merged with the Times-Dispatch in 1992, Harris covered prep and college sports, and was also a columnist. Until becoming assistant sports editor in 2003, Harris covered a variety of beats, including Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) sports, which he will continue to cover until early November.
Harris will replace sports editor Jack Berninger, who retired on June 1.
