The charitable arm of the Post-Bulletin of Rochester says that for the first time in decades it won’t sponsor the annual Fourth of July fireworks show.
Newspaper Publisher Randy Chapman says Post-Bulletin Charities has underwritten the annual fireworks show in Silver Lake Park for more than 40 years, but it won’t next year.
Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede was informed of the decision on Monday so that city and community leaders can begin exploring other funding for next summer.
Chapman says Post-Bulletin Charities has taken great pride in presenting the show in the past, and the newspaper will help promote the 2009 presentation.
Newspapers nationwide continue to struggle as the economic downturn aggravates the challenges they faced as advertising dollars moved online.
