Allbritton Communications announced Tuesday that Roger Simon, the political columnist and author, and Mike Allen, the Time magazine White House reporter, is joining former Washington Post staffers Jim Vandehei and John Harris, in its new, multimedia political news venture. Allen is also a former Washington Post staffer.
Simon will write a regular column on presidential politics and “help anchor the soon-to-be-named venture’s coverage of the 2008 campaign for the White House,” the company stated. But it is common knowledge that the name of the publication is The Politico with the Web site www.politico.com.
The name originally was The Capitol Leader. The new product launches Jan. 23 — the date of the president?s State of the Union address.
“We are committed to creating the next generation of political journalism,” said Robert Allbritton, publisher of the new venture, in a statement. “Simon is rightly regarded as one of the most dynamic and respected political journalists in the country. He is a tireless reporter with a reputation for breaking news and engaging readers in print and on television and the web.”
Said VandeHei. “He brings politics to life with a prose that is both deeply informative and entertaining. He is a must read for anyone interested in politics and power.”
Simon has been a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times and the Baltimore Sun and was syndicated nationally by Creators Syndicate. He has been a White House correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, the political editor of U.S. News & World Report and the chief political correspondent for Bloomberg News.
