‘Salt Lake Trib’ Names Exec. Editor

By:

The Salt Lake Tribune has hired Tom Baden, managing editor of The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pa., to become executive editor.

Baden, 49, will report to Tribune Editor Nancy Conway, beginning in mid-August.

In a story in Friday’s Tribune, Baden acknowledged that he is joining the paper during a tumultuous time. Editor James E. Shelledy resigned after a scandal involving two Tribune reporters who provided information about the Elizabeth Smart case to the National Enquirer. Conway replaced Shelledy.

The paper’s ownership has also been in question, as the McCarthey family continues its legal battle against the current owner, MediaNews Group Inc.

Baden served as managing editor of the Patriot-News for a decade. Previously, he was a White House correspondent and national political writer for the Newhouse News Service.
