Stephanie Salter, who wrote an op-ed column in San Francisco for 16 years, is returning to her hometown of Terre Haute to write for the Indiana city’s Tribune-Star.
Tribune-Star Editor Max Jones announced the hire in a column linked on Romenesko (http://www.poynter.org). He said Salter will be an enterprise reporter and lifestyle columnist.
Salter lost her San Francisco Chronicle column — which was distributed by Hearst News Service and Scripps Howard News Service — in 2002. Many readers protested, saying the feature was ended because of its liberal and feminist views. The Chronicle denied this. Salter, with the help of union protection, was transferred to a reporting job at the Chronicle.
Before becoming an op-ed columnist, Salter worked as a sports reporter.
