‘San Antonio Express-News’ Military Writer Calls Iraq “A Greek Tragedy”

By: Joe Strupp

Veteran military affairs writer Sig Christenson of the San Antonio Express-News, who has traveled to Iraq five times to cover the war, compared the military operation to a Greek tragedy in a harsh blog posting today.

Christenson, who is also one of the founders of Military Reporters & Editors, posted the item on the paper’s Military City blog just a day after the five-year anniversary of the U.S. invasion. He told E&P he wanted to give his critical views because, “I speak the truth.”

In the blog, Christenson stated: “So call Iraq a quandary, if you wish, or a huge mess – one with the look of a Greek tragedy driven by the human ego and all it entails. We’ve been told, even at this hour, that progress is being made, and that may be so. But we’ve heard this happy talk before over the years, only to one day find that the land we thought we had pacified was in chaos and our experiment in democracy there far off the tracks.”
