San Antonio Express-News Deputy Sports Editor Burt Henry has beenwas promoted to sports editor, replacing Brad Lehman, who was moved from that spot to Hearst Corp.’s new position of Texas sports editor, based at the Houston Chronicle, where he will supervise sports coverage for the Chronicle, Express-News and Hearst’s papers in Laredo, Beaumont, Midland and Plainview.

Henry joined the Express-News in 1989. He’d been deputy sports editor for most of the past two years. “Our philosophy won’t change here – we’ll continue to blanket South Texas with top-notch local coverage,” Henry told his paper.

Citing his “long experience in San Antonio and Texas,” Lehman called Burt “the ideal person to direct coverage here.”

Lehman had been business editor for his first three years at the Express-News before taking the top spot in the sports department two years ago.

The Express-News quoted Lehman saying, “We now have one sports staff that will serve the newspaper markets in Houston and San Antonio. That combination should allow us to better focus our resources, especially when there’s a big story that affects both markets.

While the San Antonio Express-News informed readers of the consolidation of sports staffs late last month, the move was part of a larger merging of coverage announced to staff in early June and includes business and features.

The two dailies already had merged their Austin bureaus more than three years ago.
