San Francisco Settles News Box Case

By: Mark Fitzgerald

Following a small demonstration outside City Hall condemning a “corporate sell-out,” San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors voted 8-3 on May 6 to accept a lawsuit settlement with newspaper publishers that clears the way for the elimination of freestanding news boxes downtown and in entire city neighborhoods.

Newspapers will be sold or distributed side-by-side in uniform racks installed and maintained by Clear Channel Adshel Inc. in exchange for the right to sell advertising space on the pedestal-mounted units.
