Jonathan Owens has been named sports editor of The Sanford (N.C.) Herald. He is promoted from news editor.

Owens started as a part-time sports correspondent and page designer at The Herald-Sun in Durham before joining the Herald newsroom in June 2004 as a sportswriter. In that capacity, he covered the 2005 U.S. Open and two state baseball championships, among other stories.

In 2006 he joined the news side and became a reporter for the Herald, covering education, government and general assignment work. Two years later he was promoted to news editor.

While working for the Herald, Owens has won 10 North Carolina Press Association Awards, including a first-place feature section design award in 2009, two headline awards and several writing honors.

In addition, Owens co-hosts “The Rant,” a weekly radio show broadcast from the campus of Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, with Herald Editor Billy Liggett.

Owens succeeds Alex Podlogar, who is leaving to join the sports information department at Fayetteville State University.
