South Bend, Ind.-based Schurz Communications Inc. has agreed to purchase Northern Michigan Review Inc., publisher of the daily Petoskey (Mich.) News-Review, two weeklies and other niche publications, Northern Michigan Review President Elsa C. Schaller announced Wednesday.
In addition to the 10,993-circulation evening News-Review, the company publishes two non-dailies in Michigan, the Gaylord Herald Times, and the Charlevoix Courier, along with companion publications and two PhoneGuide telephone directories distributed in northern Michigan.
Terms of the purchase agreement were not disclosed.
Santa Fe, N.M.-based broker Dirks, Van Essen & Murray represented the Schaller family in the transaction.
The News-Review had been published Monday through Friday, but recently added a Saturday edition.
The twice-weekly Gaylord Herald Times has a circulation of 6,500. The weekly Charlevoix Courier has paid circulation of 2,500. The papers’ companion weekly publication has a total distribution of 60,000. Its telephone directories reach 200,000 households and businesses in the northern portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan.
Family-owned Schurz Communications publishes 10 daily newspapers with a combined circulation of nearly 225,000. It also publishes three weekly newspapers, shopping guide publications, and owns a printing company. It owns five television stations, six radio stations, and two cable companies.
Schurz has media properties in Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, Missouri, Georgia, and Virginia.
