Online Syndicator Files For IPO
ScreamingMedia.com Inc. announced yesterday it has filed for an initial
public offering under the symbol SCRM on Nasdaq. The New York-based
company has been heavily promoting itself to the newspaper industry as
a syndicator of content to Web sites.
The New York-based company just announced Friday that it signed Morris
Communications Corp. of Augusta, Ga., as one of its newest clients.
ScreamingMedia syndicates content from nearly 400 publishers (including
The New York Times Syndicate, The Arizona Republic, and the St.
Petersburg Times) to over 530 Web sites (including America Online and
With over 100 employees, ScreamingMedia was founded by Alan Ellman. Its
chairman is Jay Chiat, founder of Chiat/Day Advertising.
The company’s main competitor is iSyndicate, which syndicates content from
over 700 sources to 170,000 Web sites. San Francisco-based iSyndicate is
backed by Scripps Ventures, Labrador Ventures, Hambrecht & Quist,
Infospace.com, and Vignette Corp.
