The Seattle Times announced yesterday that it will launch tablet and smartphone editions in late April. These new products will bring to market a significant component of The Times‘ overall strategy to provide relevant content for people how, when and where they want it. The new digital offerings will be available at no extra charge as part of a Seattle Times print subscription.
“I am delighted we are releasing these new products at this time,” said Ryan Blethen, Director, New Product Strategies for The Seattle Times and a fifth-generation member of the Blethen family, which has owned and operated the newspaper since 1896. “The Seattle Times has long been known for its high-quality journalism and its outstanding service to readers. The launch of these digital products is an extension of the service for which we are known and reinforces our commitment to provide content via platforms that are widely embraced by consumers.”
Built using HTML5 Web development, the tablet edition will provide an elegant user experience, tailored to the device. Content will include The Times‘ unique enterprise reporting and will feature a new “Editor’s Picks” section. The new smartphone edition will focus on up-to-the-minute headlines, including weather and traffic information. All content will be formatted especially for use on a smaller touch screen, with quick access to articles on the go and useful information in a mobile context. Upon the release of the new editions, registration for those wishing a digital-only subscription will be made available.
“Our near-term objective with the release of these new products is to add value for current subscribers by providing products that enhance their experience with The Seattle Times,” noted Blethen. “Over time, we expect to see audience and revenue growth with our digital offerings.” The Times expects to release regular improvements in the new digital editions throughout the coming months and years.
Seattletimes.com and The Times‘ existing mobile website, which is incorporated into iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and Blackberry apps, will remain free and open for the time being.
