AOL, Time Warner Deal Interests Two Committees

(The Hollywood Reporter) Time Warner CEO Gerald Levin and America Online CEO
Steve Case will be spending time on Capitol Hill in the coming week as the
executives answer lawmakers’ questions about their companies’ planned
megamerger.

Senators on the Judiciary Committee and the Commerce Committee have scheduled
hearings next week on the merger, the first public examination of the deal,
which has been valued at $163 billion.

Executives with the companies say the two CEOs have accepted the panels’
invitations to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, but
the final details of the Commerce Committee’s hearing Thursday have yet to be
worked out.

Executives say they expect tough questions from the senators but do not believe
there is widespread opposition to the deal. ‘No one is really opposed to the
deal, but they have some tough questions about it,’ one executive says. ‘No one
seems to be coming from the position that this is bad for America, but it’s big,
and people have some serious questions about it.’
