Alternative weekly the San Franciso Bay Guardian said Friday that it would lay off six staffers and scale back the hours of other employees.

Among those let go was veteran reporter Savannah Blackwell, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Tim Redmond, the paper’s executive editor, blamed the cutbacks on the ongoing woes in national ad sales.

“Like many publications around the country, we’re dealing with a brutal economy and a very difficult national ad sales environment,” he told the Chronicle. “We’ve had to tighten our belt.”
