Paper Called Him ‘Carpetbagger From New Jersey’
The Rev. Al Sharpton’s libel suit against the New York Post has been
thrown out by a Manhattan judge, the newspaper reports.
Sharpton filed a $20-million suit against the newspaper after a
January column by Andrea Peyser called him a ‘carpetbagger from New
Jersey.’ A day later, a Post editorial criticized the civil rights
leader for ‘exhorting his followers to oust a ‘white interloper” at
a Harlem shopping mall in 1995. The store was later destroyed by
arsonists, and seven people died in the fire, according to the Post.
Sharpton said the two articles defamed and slandered him, but a
Manhattan State Supreme Court justice dismissed the suit as groundless.
