Few communities the size of Summit County, Colo., population 24,000, can support one, let alone two free daily newspapers, but John Fayhee isn’t a rookie when it comes to startups. In 1989, he helped launch the free Summit Daily News, since bought by Swift Newspapers Inc. of Reno, Nev., and, in 2000, he helped resurrect the then-defunct magazine Mountain Gazette.
Fayhee, a founder of the new five-day Summit Independent, average distribution 5,500, plans to distinguish the paper through local ownership and a humorous take on the news.
“The Summit Daily has grown fat and lazy,” Fayhee said. “We’re the Viet Cong. Our goal is to take Saigon.”
