A biweekly opinion column called “Social Studies” has been added to Universal Press Syndicate’s OneShots service.
“The impetus for ‘Social Studies’ was my interest in the space where race, class, art, and pop culture collide — and the manner in which all of us navigate that space,” Vincent Williams said in a statement, adding that the column also includes humor.
Among the topics he recently covered in “Social Studies” were the death of Captain America, “googling? oneself, and what “Survivor” and “Saturday Night Live” can teach people about race relations in America.
For almost a decade, Williams has written pop-culture essays, music criticism, and other articles for the Baltimore City Paper and other publications. “Social Studies” had been in the BCP for only about a year when the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies named it a runner-up for best column in 2006.
