The South Bend Tribune is reducing its staff by nearly 14 percent this year, cutting 56 positions through retirements, voluntary and involuntary severance packages and by leaving some open positions unfilled.

David Ray, editor and publisher of the newspaper, says the Tribune decided to offer the severance packages to some employees after other cost-cutting efforts failed to keep pace with the economic downturn.

Like other newspapers, the Tribune is facing continuing increases in the cost of newsprint and an unprecedented slump in advertising revenue.
