SPJ Sends Letter of Concern Over Bloggers Banned In NBA Locker Rooms

By: E&P Staff

Leaders of the Society of Professional Journalists expressed concern to National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern over the Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban?s new media policy concerning bloggers, according to a statement.

The teams? new policy denies locker room access to writers whose “primary purpose is to blog.” It comes soon after Major League Baseball?s Feb. 29 decision to ban news sites from publishing galleries of baseball game photos.

Cuban banned full-time bloggers from the team?s locker room because of space concerns. The only news blogger to be permanently removed from the locker room is Dallas Morning News blogger Tim MacMahon, who also gathers quotes from players for beat writers. On Feb. 29, Cuban told MacMahon to leave the locker room, which was the same day MacMahon published a critical piece on Mavericks coach Avery Johnson.

Brewer stated that he hopes the NBA will fully investigate the issue of locker room access for media bloggers. He also offered SPJ?s assistance in developing a compromise that favors equal access .
