A newspaper sports editor has been charged with arranging a sexual encounter over the Internet with an undercover officer posing as a 12-year-old girl.

The Pennsylvania State Attorney General says 52-year-old Thomas Rose of Washington was arrested earlier today outside a McDonald’s restaurant and charged with attempted unlawful contact with a minor and criminal use of a communication facility.

Rose became sports editor of the Observer-Reporter in Washington in 1981. He has worked for the paper for almost 29 years.

Authorities say Rose drove to the restaurant in North Huntingdon Township to meet someone he thought was a young girl named Jessica with whom he corresponded in an Internet chat room.
