(AP) Thomas Bookstaver, publisher of the Springfield News-Leader, says he plans to retire after a 37-year career.

Bookstaver announced Tuesday that his retirement will be effective Oct. 8.

The Gannett Co. said Linda Ramey-Greiwe will become the newspaper’s president and publisher, effective Oct. 11.

Ramey-Greiwe (Ray-mee Gry-vee) also will be West Group vice president for Gannett, with oversight of Gannett properties in Mountain Home, Ark., St. Cloud, Minn., and Sioux Falls, S.D. She has been president of Gannett’s Newspaper Network of Central Ohio since January 2008.

Bookstaver arrived at Gannett in 1973 at the Marion, Ind., Chronicle-Tribune. He was a publisher at papers in Tarentum, Pa., Huntington, W.Va., Montogmery, Ala., and Appleton, Wis., before coming to Springfield.
