Sue Morrow, assistant ME/Photography at the St. Petersburg Times for the past six years, has taken a job as deputy director of photography at the Sacramento Bee. Her first day on the job was Aug. 29.
Morrow’s arrival in Sacramento marks her return to Northern California; the photo editor worked at Knight Ridder’s San Jose Mercury News for 10 years before joining the St. Petersburg Times.
Morrow said a desire to work more hands-on with photographers fueled her move. “I wanted to get back to content and less administration,” she told E&P. “My main priority [at The Bee] is connecting with the features department, which I have a lot of background doing.”
Morrow says her “hybrid” position will allow her to focus on special projects and coach photographers while still allowing her to exercise her design and layout skills on occasion.
Morrow takes over for Tahra Makinson-Sanders, who left to fill the director of photography position at the Santa Rosa (Calif.) Press Democrat left vacant after the April death of John Metzger. Morrow’s old position at the St. Petersburg Times has not yet been filled.
Morrow’s partner, Michael Rondou, a former staff photographer at the Times, has also relocated to Sacramento and plans to freelance.
