Sun-Times Media plans to discontinue its 11 free weekly suburban Sun newspapers by the end of the year, employees and advertisers have been told.
The eliminated titles serving areas such as Batavia, Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Geneva, Glen Ellyn, Homer Glen, Lisle and Wheaton have a combined weekly distribution of approximately 250,000 copies, the company said.
“It’s the byproduct of our evaluating the market coverage, and the positioning and profitability of those products,” Jeremy Halbreich, Sun-Times Media’s chief executive, said Thursday.
Readers and advertisers of the discontinued titles will be encouraged to avail themselves of other Sun-Times Media publications and Web sites, including those of the daily Naperville Sun, which will not be affected by elimination of the Sun weeklies, and the flagship Chicago Sun-Times.
Halbreich said the discontinued papers have relied heavily on freelancers and staff from other Sun-Times Media outlets, so this move should not contribute significantly to the companywide editorial and non-editorial staff reductions that have been under way for a few weeks now.
