Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Steve Benson of The Arizona Republic in Phoenix is moving to Creators Syndicate.
Benson’s work was distributed by United Media until yesterday, and will continue to appear on United’s Comics.com — which has an editorial cartoon section that includes Creators artists. The site describes Benson’s work as “never predictable and a little left of center.”
“Steve is a very good cartoonist, and we’re pleased that he chose Creators Syndicate,” said Creators President Rick Newcombe, when contacted today by E&P Online.
Asked for a response to the departure of Benson, a United spokesperson said: “United Media wishes him the best.”
E&P Online could not reach Benson today to ask why he’s changing syndicates.
The 1993 Pulitzer Prize winner signed with United in 1994 after 10 years with Tribune Media Services. He was also syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group from 1981 to 1984.
Benson — a former president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists — has been with The Republic since 1980 except for a 1990-91 stint with The News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash.
