Punched, tied up and gagged by an intruder in his Washington, D.C. house, a reporter for the Chattanooga Times Free Press got his hands loose and sent an e-mail pleading for help.

Herman Wang said he sent the message to a former newspaper co-worker who now is in Washington as press secretary to U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander.

The 28-year-old Wang said the former co-worker, Lee Pitts, immediately called 911. When police arrived, the intruder had left with a laptop, a television and other electronics, apparently assisted by one or more accomplices.

Wang said he was not seriously hurt. He said police told him the break-in was apparently a random act.
