Texas Paper Bucks Trend With Major Comics Expansion

By: E&P Staff

At a time when many papers are cutting comics and comics space, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times is expanding its funnies lineup.

The Texas paper announced yesterday that it’s adding 11 comics to its daily pages (which are expanding from two to three) and five comics to its Sunday section.

“Comics have long been a favorite part of the newspaper for many readers, and we want to respond to even more people by offering more strips,” said Caller-Times Vice President/Editor Libby Averyt, as quoted in her paper.

Starting yesterday, the Caller-Times brought back “For Better or For Worse” and added “The Pajama Dairies,” “Retail,” “Rhymes With Orange,” and “Rudy Park.”

Today, the paper added the aforementioned five comics as well as “Brevity,” “Clear Blue Water,” “Condorito,” “Frazz,” “Jump Start,” and “Mutts.”

Reader requests led to the reinstatement of “For Better or For Worse.”

The Caller-Times’ comics expansion was mentioned today on Alan Gardner’s Daily Cartoonist blog.
