    Subscription means commitment, and many readers are not ready to tie the knot. Publishers should look for ways to convert readers into paying customers without necessarily monthly billing. Mobile apps offer a great way to do this. I’ve seen many dailies with high newsstand numbers offer this to their audience. They are still majority single-issue purchases, however in a new format aligned with reader consumption habits. If your app is branded, then you can try to move them to subscribe. But the first step is to get them to pay.
