The Oregonian Conducts Another Round of Layoffs. This Time, 11 Newsroom Staffers Are Gone.

The Oregonian’s editor, Mark Katches, broke some news to his staff this morning that left nobody smiling.

“Today, the positions of 11 of our colleagues in the newsroom are being eliminated,” Katches wrote in a memo to his staff.

    Car ads, along with real estate, plus employment ads, have gone to the internet. These used to be lucrative to newspapers. The Oregonian is not alone. The Chicago Tribune where I once worked is now barely 2 sections and cost $500+ a year. Weekly newspapers with small, poorly paid staffs now cover community news, but they’re struggling, too. Sad.
