?The State? Putting South Carolina Gamecocks Sports Coverage Behind Paywall

By: E&P Staff

Just in time for the kickoff of college football, The State in Columbia, S.C., announced Thursday it will begin charging non-subscribers for access to its GoGamecocks.com Website devoted to coverage of University of South Carolina sports.

“In the coming days, we will begin charging a modest membership fee to access a new and improved GoGamecocks.com web site,”  Henry B. Haitz III, president and publisher of The State Media Co., wrote at the site.

Memberships will be available for $50 a year  or $10 a month, Haitz said. Subcribers to the print newspaper will continue to have free access no matter the frequency of their subscription, he added.

“Why the change? Giving you a ‘best-in-class,’ information-packed experience at GoGamecocks.com takes additional resources that require us to charge a modest membership fee,” Haitz wrote. The site will provide “more USC sports coverage than ever,” he added.
