The Whidbey Examiner has been purchased by Sound Publishing, Inc.   Publisher Kasia Pierzga announced the sale was effective June 8.  Pierzga will continue as the 1,200 paid circulation newspaper’s publisher and editor.  The Examiner is an adjudicated county seat weekly.


Sound Publishing President Gloria Fletcher said, “I’m very glad that Kasia will continue to lead the Examiner.”  Pierzga has owned and operated the 17-year-old newspaper since 2006.  Acknowledging the newspaper’s many journalism and advertising awards Fletcher stated, “The Examiner is a quality publication serving readers and businesses in central Island County.”  Twice the Examiner has received Washington Newspaper Publishers Association’s prestigious General Excellence Award, taking first place in 1998 and second place last year.

In addition to its print edition the Examiner publishes several multimedia platforms including its primary digital news edition, and a buy local online directory of Island businesses called “I Buy Whidbey.”  The newspaper also maintains an online youth outreach special section called “Wolf Club News.”  Special annual print projects include Farm Tour Guide, Coupeville & Central Whidbey Visitor Guide, and the Whidbey Green Guide.     


“I’ve had a lifelong passion for newspapers, and feel very strongly about the critical role they play in their home communities,” Pierzga said.  She added, “The newspaper industry today is facing many challenges, but those also can be opportunities for change and growth.”


Dave Gauger, president of Gauger Media Service, Inc. in Raymond, Wash. represented the seller in this transaction.  Sound Publishing is the largest community newspaper group in the Pacific Northwest, owning and operating 52 publications with a combined circulation of 730,000.  Sound also produces four other publications on Whidbey Island.
