For more than a week, someone has used duplicate keys to remove coins from the vending boxes of three North Carolina newspapers.
The Times-News, Freedom Communications’ paper in Burlington, reported the thefts occurring from 20 to 25 of its boxes, as well as from others containing Paxton Media’s High Point Enterprise and Landmark Communications’ News & Record, in Greensboro.
The three dailies are within a 25- to 45-minute drive of one another in the north-central part of the state, and thefts have occurred in several nearby towns.
Enterprise Circulation Director Daniel Pittman told the Times-News that someone breaks off the bottom half of box locks and uses them to make master keys for each district.
Pittman said he gave High Point police a surveillance video showing a clear image of the person thought to be committing the thefts.
The Times-News also has a suspect on video, which it posted on its website. Images captured by a surveillance camera in Burlington show at least two people involved, said Cory Hamilton, a Times-News district sales manager.
