An exhibit called “Emancipation and Denigration: Thomas Nast Pictures Black America” is being held through June 14 at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, N.Y.

Nast (1840-1902), who was sympathetic to the plight of African-Americans in the 19th century, is considered the father of modern editorial cartooning.

The exhibit includes 16 wood engravings by Nast from the collection of Hamilton College professor Jay G. Williams, who’s also curating the show.
