THOMSON SELLS CANADIAN NEWSPAPERS

By: Staff Reports

Alberta Dailies Go To Horizon Publications

Thomson Corp. of Toronto announced its intent to sell the Southern
Alberta (Canada) newspaper group to Horizon Publications Inc. of
Kelowna, British Columbia, for an undisclosed amount.

The Southern Alberta group includes the Lethbridge Herald and
Medicine Hat News, dailies representing combined circulation of
35,500.

Horizon publishes The Daily Courier of Kelowna.

The sale comes at the end of Thomson’s sell-off of all of its
newspaper operations, excluding the flagship Globe and Mail. So
far this year, Thomson has sold 49 daily U.S. newspapers, and
there are only three Canadian dailies still for sale.

Thomson says it is shedding its newspapers to focus on reducing
debt and growing its electronic publishing and lucrative trade
publishing assets.
